Even though I’m a musician, I somehow don’t seem to write about music very much on here. I’ll try to do better about that when I find things I like.
I’ve been seeing King Krule’s name around for a long time now. Typically, it takes me seeing an artist’s name a few times before I finally give them a listen. I’m not sure why that is– maybe because there’s such a constant stream of things to listen to, that I need some kind of qualifier to listen to things. If people keep talking about someone, they must be good, right? Something like that.
Watching this video was also my first time hearing any of his music, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! Obviously, a lot of other people enjoy it too, because he’s doing really well and has earned him self a fair amount of respect in the last year or so. The video opens with an appropriated clip of Alfred Hitchcock introducing one of his plays whilst standing on a wall. That play turns out to be Marshall, also standing on a wall, and playing guitar (take that, Hitchcock!).
‘A Lizard State’ is jazzy and the vocals are atonal at times, which I really enjoy in this case. King Krule (real name, Archy Marshall), has a brilliant way of singing as if he’s saying exactly on his mind at the time. The equivalent to a twitter rant-styled stream of consciousness, but more eloquent and without those pesky misspellings. And can we talk about all that steez he has on the guitar? I love it.
I’ll definitely be looking into more of his work. I’ve had jazz music on my heart for the past couple of months, and this will do very nicely, indeed.
